Study commitment

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

1 x 1 hour online lecture per week, 6 x 2 hour practical experience (computer practical) per trimester.

Content

The principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their application to environmental science will be described. The unit will cover spatial data types and their collection, organisation, manipulation and integration, managing GIS projects, spatial analysis and display. Student will complete practical exercises to achieve basic competency in widely used GIS software. They will then apply their knowledge and skills to create their own GIS to address a real environmental question.
