Students will on average spend 300 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

10 x 1 day lectures/seminars (6 hours per day) in weeks 1, 2, 5, 8, and 11.

Content

This unit establishes the fundamental knowledge to understand circular city systems with focus on the design and implementation of urban environments that prioritise sustainable, regenerative practices. Circular Cities are characterized by their ability to minimise waste and maximize the reuse of resources, creating a more efficient and resilient city system.

The unit establishes the history, ideas, forces and processes affecting the planning and making of cities, prioritising the importance of social infrastructure, and liveability. The unit examines the various components that comprise a circular city framed by Urban Life, Environmental Systems, and Urban Systems specifically through an overview of how circular economy principles are applied to critical challenges including; infrastructure, reuse and recycling of materials, energy, waste management, water systems, and urban agriculture.

Throughout this unit you are encouraged to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving, examining case studies of circular cities from around the world and evaluating their successes and challenges.
