The program is for a duration of 3 years and scheduled to commence in October 2025.
This PhD focuses on myopia (short-sight), a growing global public health issue, particularly among children. As myopia prevalence rises, it is crucial to understand its development, with an emphasis on anterior eye health, nutrition, and environmental influences. With increased digital device use, its impact on eye health, coupled with the role of nutrition, requires a holistic approach to addressing myopia in developing eyes.
This project aims to comprehensively investigate the interplay of myopia, anterior eye health, nutrition, and environmental factors longitudinally in children.
Project aim
This research project seeks to comprehensively investigate the interplay of myopia (short-sight), anterior eye health, nutrition, and environmental factors in children, addressing a critical gap in our understanding of this complex global public health issue.
Objectives:
- examine Myopia Development: Investigate factors contributing to myopia in children, including genetics and environmental influences.
- evaluate Anterior Eye Health: Assess how nutrition affects the ocular surface, meibomian glands, and overall eye health.
- explore Nutritional Influences: Investigate how key nutrients like vitamins A and D, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants impact myopia and macula health.
- assess Environmental Factors: Analyse how outdoor exposure, screen time, and socioeconomic status affect myopia development and eye health.
