Pathway to a PhD

Why choose Deakin

This is a supervised research program. The research of each candidate is conducted under the supervision of a full-time member of the academic staff. Candidates are required to participate in an oral colloquium about one third of the way through candidature in which the proposed research is defended, and will ultimately to submit a thesis embodying the results of their research. The thesis may be a single volume of disciplinary scholarship or a folio consisting of an exegesis and two to four research products relating to professional practice.

Candidates showing significant promise as research students may be invited to transfer their enrolment to the Doctor of Philosophy program. This generally occurs at or post colloquium. Transfer is dependent on meeting the academic requirements for PhD entry and must have the full support of the principal supervisor.

Course structure

How your research degree is structured

Your Masters by Research is built around your own independent research project and the contribution you want to make. Over two years full-time (part-time available), you'll work closely with an expert supervisory team to investigate a problem, question or opportunity, hone your specialisation and contribute new insights to your field. Your research program will be shaped by your project, discipline and research goals.

Your research
Undertake an independent research project in your field, culminating in a masters thesis of up to 50,000 words. Thesis formats can vary depending on your discipline and research.

Your supervision
Work closely with an expert supervisory team who will guide your research and support your progress throughout your degree.

Your development
Build capabilities beyond your thesis through Deakin's Researcher Development Academy, with tailored opportunities to strengthen your research practice, grow your networks and develop your engagement and career skills.

Your industry opportunities
Depending on your project, you may have opportunities to connect your research with industry, build professional networks and gain experience translating research into practice.

What to expect while studying

You may be able to study available units in the optional third trimester to fast-track your degree, however your course duration may be extended if there are delays in meeting course requirements, such as completing a placement.

At Deakin, we're committed to ensuring an inclusive environment that supports all students to belong, thrive and succeed. We work closely with students, where needed, to identify potential barriers to participation and where possible, provide tailored support so students can engage with learning and assessment activities.

If you are neurodivergent, have a disability, health condition or mental health condition that may impact your study or participation in university life, and want to know how Deakin could support you, contact our Domestic students (opens in a new window) or International students (opens in a new window) or Disability Resource Centre (opens email client) teams for a collaborative and confidential discussion. This discussion is to support you to make plans for your studies and future career and will not have any bearing on your application to the course.

When can I start?
