How to apply for a scholarship

To make sure you have the best chance of securing a scholarship, you may want to take a few extra steps to ensure your application is the best it can be. Here are some of our top tips for a successful application.

  1. Eligible? Apply

Use your time wisely. Browse the available scholarships, double-check the eligibility requirements (you'll find them on individual scholarship detail pages) and apply for all the scholarships you're suitable for. You never know what you may be awarded, and you don't want to miss out by simply not submitting an application.

  2. Plan your time

Make sure you have enough time to complete your application before the deadline. Keep in mind, applying for scholarships often includes a series of questions requiring you to submit personal statements, or provide information about your personal circumstances. If you need to come back and finish your application at a later point, remember it can be saved online at any time.

  3. Proofread your application

Check that you've answered all the required sections, and it's a good idea to avoid using terms like 'as above'. You should re-state your circumstances across any sections that require it. Also, this is the time to double-check for spelling errors.

  4. Provide supporting documentation

Most scholarships require some form of supporting documentation to be supplied. Refer to our advice about supporting documentation for more details.

  5. Keep to the deadline

Take note of the deadline for each scholarship you want to apply for, and add them to your calendar. Make sure you submit your application on time with all supporting documents. You don't want to prepare all the information for your application then miss the deadline.

Closing dates

Late applications

All applications must be submitted, with supporting documentation, by the scholarship closing date and time. Late applications will not be accepted for any reason, this includes internet, connection or computer issues or difficulties compiling supporting documentation. Please allow enough time to complete and submit your application. Do not leave it to the last minute.

Don't have your ATAR yet?

If you are a current Year 12 student applying for an academic or merit-based scholarship for Trimester/Semester 1 next year, you do not need to wait until you receive your ATAR. Apply early, when you have more time. Just remember to provide your VTAC ID when you register for the Deakin Application Portal.

When will you know?

Your application will be assessed and ranked based on the details you provide and your supporting documentation. The scholarship application process is highly competitive with a limited number of scholarships available. Unfortunately, not all eligible applicants will receive one.

If you are successful, you will be contacted by the email account you nominated within your application portal account Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted.

You'll find out if you were successful usually within four weeks of the application closing date. If you have not received an offer by this time, you have been unsuccessful. You can view the status of your application via your scholarship application portal account.

Coursework scholarship application periods

For our coursework scholarship program we have three main scholarship application periods:

  • Trimester/Semester 1 - this application period normally opens late August of the prior year and remains open until March. During this period, scholarship opportunities will open and close at different times. Scholarships which open earlier will generally close earlier, so you will need to take note of the open/close dates. You may also need to visit the Find a scholarship page regularly during this period to apply for all scholarship opportunities you are eligible for.
  • Trimester/Semester 2 -  this application period normally opens mid-June and closes mid-July.
  • Trimester 3 - this application period normally opens late-October and closes mid-November.

The dates vary slightly each year, so we encourage you to check the important date information on the individual scholarship pages within the Find a scholarship page.
