Designing smarter technologies

Using technology to innovate culture, education and the arts

Discover how researchers in the Faculty of Arts and Education are creating sustainable and ethical technologies to change our future for the better.

Our research

Our research fuses theory with creativity to revolutionise technology and its ability to propel contemporary culture and learning. Our research, supported by Deakin’s investment in world-class virtual production facilities, is having an impact on gaming, television and screen, and advertising.

Across the faculty, we consider:

  • ways to revolutionise filmmaking practices using virtual production
  • how interacting with and through technology can improve training, education and entertainment activities
  • using new screen technologies to help us re-examine our past and shape the poetics and politics of contemporary Australia.

Research highlights

Our faculty strategic research institutes, centres and groups are leaders in addressing the issues facing our society and culture.

Because the night

Because the night is an immersive theatre production by the Malthouse Theatre. The theatre partnered with Deakin Motion Lab researchers to create a digital experience using a game engine platform. This innovative method addressed the challenge of digitally preserving the immersive theatre production while allowing a digital audience to explore and engage with the story world.

Passing electrical storms

Shaun Gladwell’s extended reality (XR) installation Passing electrical storms takes viewers on a journey through the universe using VR and tactile feedback. The result is a deeply affecting and thought-provoking exploration of life and the universe beyond the body.

Working with 360 technology allowed me to create immersive experiences, both sound and image, that encourage audiences to think differently about the microbial world.

Our research groups

Now more than ever it is vital that we thrive together. At Deakin, we’re interested in how people learn, work and play, supporting communities across the world to be resilient, vibrant and inclusive. Our multidisciplinary research centres and groups in the Faculty of Arts and Education are aligned with the Designing smarter technologies theme.

Deakin Motion Lab

Deakin Motion Lab is leading the charge exploring the potential of digital and screen technologies to enhance our learning, work and entertainment experiences. We investigate the opportunities, constraints and implications of emerging screen technologies in real-life contexts.

Designing smarter technologies

The sustainable, progressive society of the future will be underpinned by the smart technologies built today. We’re creating human-centred technologies that improve people’s lives, while playing a key role in Australia’s economic future.
