Enabling a sustainable world

Protecting our future through arts and education

Discover how the Faculty of Arts and Education is using the Enabling a sustainable world research strength to facilitate strategic partnerships and deliver new insights that enrich our communities.

Our research

Our research uses the social sciences, creative arts and humanities to explore pathways towards a greener future. We deliver research that examines the cultural, economic and social drivers of environmental challenges in Australia and abroad.

Across the faculty, we consider:

  • ways to effectively communicate climate and environmental challenges to society
  • the role of arts activism in the Anthropocene
  • how decolonisation affects today’s socio-ecological challenges
  • ways we can support intergenerational learning for environmental justice
  • creative uses of digital technologies to help mitigate ecological collapse.

Our research influences organisations and businesses, informs policy and actively engages with the broader community.

Research highlights

Our faculty strategic research institutes, centres and groups are leaders in addressing the issues facing our society and culture.

Front beach back beach

Front beach back beach was an ambitious scattered-site public art event that featured the work of 18 local and national artists/collectives responding to hidden and overlooked histories of the Mornington Peninsula. With a strong focus on creating new opportunities for community engagement, artists worked with targeted community groups and demographics in multiple ways, including research, co-production, participation and performance.

My PhD supervisors at Deakin are perfect mentors. They work with me to strengthen my academic profile through co-publishing, conference presentations and giving me the opportunity to be involved with research beyond my project.
