Study a PhD in Australia andIndia

With a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras – Deakin University Research Academy, you’ll combine international travel and research, and have access to supervision, facilities and resources from both institutions. Upon completion, you’ll receive a unique testamur issued by two world-leading universities.

In 2024, there are 30 jointly supervised PhD opportunities (from a list of 38 possible projects) that leverage the expertise and resources of IITM and Deakin. Twenty projects will be offered at IITM and 10 at Deakin. You can apply for up to two projects.

Successful applicants will receive a scholarship

All successful applicants will receive a scholarship including a $34,400 annual stipend (2024 rate, tax-exempt), relocation and travel grant of up to $5,000, travel insurance for 12 months in Chennai, and full tuition fee waiver at Deakin.

Are you eligible to apply?

The research academy welcomes students from across the globe. You’ll start your research at your home institution and undertake a residency at the host institution, usually in the second year of study. Application criteria:

  • If you hold an Indian passport, you will start your project at IITM, and complete a year of your study at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia.
  • If you are an Australian citizen, you will commence at Deakin and complete a year at IITM in Chennai, India.
  • If you hold citizenship from a country other than India or Australia, you can choose your home institution.

2024 application timelines

  • Applications close: 5 May 2024
  • Shortlisting and interviews: May 2024
  • Offers sent to successful candidates: June 2024
  • Cohort commences at IITM and Deakin: 1 July 2024.

Please note, a second round of projects is expected for September 2024.

Preparing your application

Check your eligibility, select a project (you can choose up to two projects based on your interests and expertise) and prepare your documentation. Documentation varies depending on departments and schools; you may need to submit:

  • academic transcripts
  • curriculum vitae (CV) detailing publications, relevant professional and research experience
  • evidence of English language proficiency
  • statement of purpose (a written statement of your motivation)
  • contact details of two academic referees.

Complete and submit the online application form. The details you submit will be used to assess your suitability and eligibility.
