New pathways to Deakin for South West TAFE graduates

17 December 2018

Deakin has expanded its pathway arrangements with South West TAFE, meaning more regional students will have the opportunity to leverage their TAFE qualifications into further study.

The exclusive regional initiative has now been updated for 2019, with the Deakin Bachelor of Health Sciences and Bachelor of Psychological Sciences now accepting entry from graduates from any Diploma or Advanced Diploma from South West TAFE.

The renewed pathways program brings the number of South West TAFE qualifications eligible for Deakin entry to 11. The majority of those qualifications are guaranteed entry to courses such as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Nursing, and Bachelor of Environmental Science (Environmental Management and Sustainability).

Deakin Warrnambool Campus Director Alistair McCosh said the initiative provided certainty to regional TAFE students.

"Deakin University and South West TAFE first established a Guaranteed Entry arrangement in 2012 so that our region's students would be assured of a place at Deakin on completion of their Diploma or Advanced Diploma," Mr McCosh said.

"This program has provided certainty to students as they commence their studies at South West TAFE, knowing that Deakin recognises their qualifications. With this new expanded offering, more students than ever will have the opportunity to continue their education journey at Deakin, including through specific courses at our Warrnambool Campus."

South West TAFE CEO Mark Fidge said the expanded pathways program was great news for all South West TAFE students.

"This gives our students even more opportunity to go on to further education and increases their chances of reaching their goals and gaining employment in their chosen fields," Mr Fidge said.

"This renewed program further enhances the relationship between Deakin University and South West TAFE, broadening educational opportunities in our region."

South West TAFE qualifications now eligible for pathway entry into Deakin University include:

  • Diploma of Visual Arts
  • Diploma of Accounting
  • Diploma of Leadership and Management
  • Diploma of Agriculture
  • Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management
  • Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management
  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Diploma of Conservation and Land Management
  • Diploma of Community Service
  • Diploma of Nursing
  • Diploma of Remedial Massage

Mr McCosh said TAFE graduates were an important part of the Deakin student community.

"We recognise the hard work that goes into completing TAFE studies," he said.

"The pathways program supports TAFE students into achieving their career goals, by taking their hands-on and practical learning from TAFE and building on it, allowing our students to gain a deeper knowledge towards a sustainable career with a Deakin University degree."
