Research interests

My research interests lie broadly within marine ecology, with a particular emphasis on:

  •     the roles of habitat-forming seaweeds in ecological systems
  •     life history dynamics of seaweeds
  •     impacts of anthropogenic disturbances (e.g. sewage effluent, climate change) on habitat-forming seaweeds and the ecosystems they support
  •     the roles macroalgae may play in carbon sequestration and climate mitigation
  •     exploration of the unique and diverse temperate Australian marine flora for sustainable food, fibre and health benefits.

I encourage partnerships with industry and government agencies.

Teaching interests

I am passionate about the marine environment, sustainably feeding the world and educating the next generation of science leaders and the general public to empower everyone to make the world we live in a better place for all.

My teaching practice is founded on the premise of student engagement in hands-on experiences and creating 'real-life' learning environments that promote both individual responsibility for the learning journey and development of skills to be effective members of teams.
