Biography
I am a clinician-academic (Clinical Neuropsychology) whose research program seeks to identify children who are at greatest risk following early life brain injuries so that they may receive timely and optimized support. My work is interdisiplinary and seeks to determine whether brain imaging biomarkers can predict outcomes at the individual child level.
I also work in the UK where my research was funded by an ERC Consolidator Fellowship to combine computer science, quantitative analysis of brain MRI and neuropychological assessment in heterogenous paediatric groups. There I am the Director of Aston Neuroscience Institute and Aston Brain Centre. Previously, I led the Australian long-term outcomes study of prenatal anticonvulsant exposures, funded by an ARC Linkage grant. This work has contributed to international policy changes through involvement with the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, and the European Medicines Agency. More recently this work has led to involvement in New Zealand's ACC Advisory Board regarding specific medications and their effects on the unborn child.
In my role at Deakin I am the Higher Degrees Research Co-Ordinator for School of Psychology, and a member of the SEED SRC and CNU labs.

My research seeks to provide a scientific evidence base to understanding the consequences and mechanisms of early life brain injury on long-term child outcomes. I have expertise in cutting edge brain imaging technologies and combine these with clinically relevant neuropsychological investigations to produce research that matters to families, healthcare providers and policy makers.
My current research in the paediatric setting focusses on three key areas:
- Risk stratification using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers in a machine learning environment to predict long-term child neurodevelopment
- Mechanisms of poor neurodevelopmental outcome following prenatal anticonvulsant exposure
- Presurgical mapping of eloquent cortex in children with refractory epilepsy
I am also fortunate to collaborate with colleagues on studies in ageing, including:
- The effects of androgen deprivation therapy to treat prostate cancer on brain structure and function (CogCan study, funded by Prostate Cancer UK; PI Prof Grunfeld, Birkbeck, London)
- The cognitive risks associated with diabetes in adults (PI Professor Srikanth, Monash Australia)
