Biography

I am a Lecturer in War Studies at the Australian War College, Canberra. Prior to joining Deakin, I was Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Political Science and International Studies, at the University of Queensland.

I have a long experience of researching normative debates about the legitimacy of war. I research how we make decisions about when it is justified, the kinds of arguments we use to justify our choices, and how these have changed over time.

I am working on two projects. The first is a monograph on the history legal, moral and constitutional arguments that actors draw on when they argue about the legitimacy of force. The second is about how debates about the legitimacy of force have been shaped, and influenced by, ideas of progress in the post war era.

Excerpts of my work have appeared in internationally recognized publications. I co-authored an article in the European Journal of International Relations with some of my conclusions applied to the jus in bello, and published a book chapter about the Seven Years’ War in a prize-winning Oxford UP book.
