Biography
Professor Matthews is from a multi-disciplinary construction background, holding a PhD and a first-class honours degree in Architecture and post-graduate qualifications in mathematics, computing, and environmental studies. She is currently employed as a Professor of Digital Construction in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at Deakin University and has specialist expertise in Digital Engineering. Since joining academia in late 2009, she has been a recipient of over £1.5 million Technology Strategy Board (TSB) research funding (UK). She is an active researcher on several projects focused on designing and using integrated collaborative digital information modelling and management systems. She is currently Chief Investigator on an ARC Discovery grant (DP210101281), exploring mechanisms for containing and reducing rework in mega transport projects. Her role on this project is to analyse and propose data structures and digital information sharing processes across design and construction to enable better management of rework.
Before 2009 Professor Matthews spent seven years working in the software design and development industry, employed as a software design and development manager for the commercial arm of the Royal Institute of British Architects. During this time, she was responsible for managing a team of designers and developers to deliver a portfolio of innovative information solutions to the construction industry. The products were used by more than 5000 construction firms across the UK, including 96 of the top 100 Architects Journal practices.
Since her return to academia, she has maintained strong links with industry. At the University of Northumbria, she was a founding member of the UK BIM (Building Information Modelling) Academy. She worked alongside Ryder Architecture to combine industry experience with academic knowledge to create a centre of excellence in BIM and Integrated Project Delivery. Her research in BIM and digital engineering was continued at Curtin University with the establishment of the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Cooperative, a multi-disciplinary community of practice with industry partners that included Hassell (design), Multiplex (construction), PDC BIM Evolved (digital engineering), Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated (JLL) (real estate management) and the Public Transport Authority (client).
At Deakin, she is heavily engaged with the Level Crossing Removal Project’s Western Program Alliance, comprising McConnell Dowell, Mott Macdonald and Arup, working alongside their war-on-waste program to examine how we can better monitor and manage rework in transport mega-projects (aligned with ARC DP220101867). This relationship has led to unprecedented access to the Alliances quality management data and systems to support ongoing research collaboration.
Professor Matthews has published extensively in several leading internationally recognised scholarly journals such as Automation in Construction, Advances in Engineering Software, ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems, Environment and Planning C, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Production Planning and Control and Transportation Research A: Policy and Practice.
Professor Matthews serves on the Editorial Board of several leading journals and has undertaken special issues on a variety of topics, including “Digital Engineering: Past, Present and Future” and “BIM for Asset Management”. She has also been the receipt of best paper awards for her publications in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Infrastructure Asset Management and Built Environment Asset and Project Management. While at the UK BIM Academy, she won the Build London Live 2012: Multi-Disciplinary BIM award, and Build Qatar Live 2012: Overall winner.
