Mr John Cumming

John Cumming is a Senior Lecturer in Screen and Design at Deakin University. John’s independent documentaries and experimental-narrative short films have screened internationally and he has worked in feature, community, corporate, educational and commercial film and video production, served on the editorial boards of local and international publications and worked with a number of film festivals, film and community media organisations. He has also served as Vice President and President of the Australian Screen Production Education and Research Association (ASPERA) and until 2018, as course director of Film, Television and Animation at Deakin. He is coordinator of the Deakin Film, Television and Animation Archive and has coordinated film and media courses at the UTS and the University of Melbourne and has taught at the VCA and La Trobe University. He has written for a range of journals and magazines on independent filmmaking and cultural policy in Australia. His book The Films of John Hughes: a history of independent screen production in Australia is published by Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) in association with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), RMIT and Deakin universities.
