Biography
Nikki Phillips is a Professor of Nursing and the Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University. Prior to joining Deakin in 2009 Nikki had over 15 years' experience facilitating the learning of both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Bhutan. Nikki has significant experience in problem-based student learning and inquiry-based learning methods. She is committed to quality nursing courses that incorporate evidence-based practice, person-centred care, quality and risk management and improving patient outcomes.

Nikki’s program of research is focused on evidence-based risk management strategies to prepare graduates to deliver quality and safe patient care. Nikki's teaching and learning research investigates best practice approaches to learning and teaching within a quality and safety framework for curricula.

Teaching interests
Nikki was the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School from 2010 to 2018 and co-led curricula development and oversaw the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing (Clinical Leadership), Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Psychological Science, and the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion. Nikki’s teaching has been in the areas of acute care nursing practices and research. Nikki has also taught into the Master program and supervises Honours students and Higher Degree in Research students both at Master and PhD levels.

Professional activities
Professor Phillips is the Deputy Chair of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council’s Registered Nurse Accreditation Committee that is responsible for assuring the quality of national nursing education that leads to registration as a registered nurse. She has participated in this Committee since 2013 and been the Deputy Chair since 2017. In 2018 Professor Phillips contributed to the Department of Health and Human Services (i) Review of Nursing and Midwifery Graduate Transition to Practice Programs in Victoria Advisory Committee and (ii) the Midwifery Workforce sub-group. She is a member of the national Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery and the Victorian and Tasmanian Heads of School Committee.
