A special public exhibition of exceptional work by students from Deakin University’s School of Architecture and Built Environment will be open to the public in Melbourne and Geelong during November 2018.

PaperSpace is an annual student exhibition showcasing outstanding work from Deakin architecture and landscape architecture students. The exhibition demonstrates that between the entrenched positions of traditional architectural discourse there exists a ‘middle ground’, an ‘in between’ space where the conceptual and the utilitarian must come together, to address a wider public responsibility, and where what is not said is often just as important as what is said.

The successful design studio projects on display illustrate this concept. Drawings, models and portfolios, covering a range of overarching propositional values, in a manner that emphasises the importance of diversification in the architectural discipline. The student work specifically focuses on how the material, ecological and social context of architecture could evolve and change through time. The exhibition demonstrates that architecture’s responsibilities to the public realm are larger than Space and more durable than Paper.

The School of Architecture and Built Environment is proud PaperSpace occupies the public atrium of Federation Square for the fourth year in a row during Melbourne Cup week, before moving to Geelong later in the month.
