Welcome to the September edition of dKin Times.

Spring has officially sprung, and we have launched into September with a number of prizes and awards being received around Deakin.

The first was awarded to the Deakin University Partners in Nursing and Midwifery Research Network, a unique university-health services partnership focussed on improving the quality and safety of health care, received the Business Higher Education Round Table (BHERT) Award for Outstanding Collaboration in Higher Education & Training.

The second cluster of accolades were received at the Australian Financial Review Higher Education Awards. Deakin received three awards: anthropologist Professor Emma Kowal was jointly named Emerging Leader; Deakin's HSBC Blue Carbon Citizen Science Program shared the Industry Engagement award; and Deakin Indian Research Initiative (DIRI), won the International Education award.

Three Deakin researchers are part of a team awarded a Eureka Prize for developing a world first inorganic explosives detection device that will help improve bomb detection capability at airports and other public spaces. This highly esteemed prize is awarded for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia.

Finally, to support future pioneering research that is being conducted at our university, Deakin received $7.88 million for health research from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The successful projects address obesity prevention, the link between mental and physical health, helping new mothers reduce their risk of diabetes, and a new mental health screening tool.

Deakin's research is diverse, innovative and compelling, and you can read about our breakthroughs on Disruptr, Deakin's research-centred platform that will be officially launched tonight. Inspired by our wide breadth of expertise, Disruptr content encourages conversation by highlighting the impact our research has had, the many questions it may raise and the potential it holds for the future.

I hope you share my pride in Deakin’s achievements, and enjoy the stories in this edition of dKin Times.

Best wishes,

Iain
