Biography summary

Mahmud is an Associate Professor in Structural Engineering at the School of Engineering in Deakin University (Waurn Ponds Campus). He also holds a visiting Associate Professorial role in UNSW Canberra and has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor at Nanjing Forestry University since 2019. Mahmud also held academic and research roles at Imperial College London (UK), University of Queensland (Australia), University of New South Wales (Australia) and in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

Mahmud obtained his PhD in structural engineering from Imperial College London as a Commonwealth Scholar. He won university gold medal as an undergraduate student, won the best speaker award at the Young Researcher Conference (IStructE) during his PhD, and was awarded various research awards/ fellowships including William Mong Fellowship (Hong Kong) and Confucius Fellowship (China).

He is currently working closely with a number of key stakeholders in the Australian timber industry including AKD Softwoods, XLam Australia, CLOS and few others to promote use of engineered timber and mass timber products in construction. He also has close relationship with INBAR (International Network for Bamboo and Rattan) and has been working in collaboration with Nanjing Forestry University, China to develop design rules for structural use of bamboo and engineered bamboo products. Although his recent research interests are primarily focussed on renewable bio-composite materials and structures, Mahmud contributed significantly in the field of thin-walled metallic structures especially stainless steel and high strength steel structures. He is also keen to explore innovative structural uses of 3D printed materials including metallic micro-lattice materials and bio-composite materials. He has published over 100 technical papers, some of which are heavily cited in the relevant field.

Mahmud is also a very passionate lecturer and have won numerous recognitions for his teaching innovations and efforts at Deakin University, UNSW Canberra and University of Queensland.

  • Stability and design of mass timber and other engineered timber products in construction
  • Behaviour and design of thin-walled metallic structures including stainless steel, high strength steel, aluminium and other high strength alloys
  • Numerical analysis of complex structural problems
  • 3D printed metallic and bio-composite structural components for engineering applications

Structural analysis and design; Mechnaical behaviour of various construction materials including engineered timber and mass timber, bamboo and engineered bamboo, metallic alloys such as stainless steel, steel and aluminium; Beahviour of special types of concrete; Composite materials such as steel-concrete composite and steel-timber composite; Structural integrity of 3D printed components; FE simulation of structural behaviour under various types of loading. 

Media appearances

Mahmud took part in the 2019 inaugural PInt of Science event in Geelong and gave a talk on 3D printing in the construction sector.
