Biography summary
Mahmud is a Professor of Structural Engineering and has been serving as the Associate Head of School (Research) in the School of Engineering at Deakin University since July 2021. He held many leadrship roles incluidng the head of civil and environemntal engineering discipline, member of the Deakin University Academic Board, SEBE faculty "champion" in Deakin Early Career Academic Futures (DECAF) Research Peer Mentoring program. Before joining Deakin University in 2017, Mahmud worked as an academic in The University of New South Wales and The University of Queensland in Australia. Since 2014, Mahmud has been working closely with Nanjing Forestry University and played a key role in establishing an International Research Centre on Bio-composite Materials and Structures. He is also one of the founding chairs of the biennial conference on bio-composite materials and structures.
He is leading the Engineered Timber Structures Research Group in Deakin University and is also one of the research theme leaders in 3DEC (Deakin Digital Design and Engineering Centre). His research projects are funded by various industry partners including XLam, AKD Softwoods, DAF, FWPA, EWPAA.
Mahmud obtained his PhD as a commonwealth scholar from Imperial College London. His research on “Structural Stainless Steel Design: Resistance Based on Deformation Capacity” was one of the early contributions that formed the basis for Continuous Strength Method (CSM). Although his initial research contributions were mostly focussed on thin-walled nonlinear metallic structures including stainless steel, high strength steel and aluminium; Mahmud always embraces new concepts and materials in structural applications. Over the years, he contributed to various aspects of geopolymer concrete, innovative composite materials and 3D printed metallic structures. In recent times, Mahmud has been contributing heavily in structural applications of renewable materials including timber and bamboo for a sustainable future. He is an academic adviser to WoodSolutions and is a task force member of INBAR (International Network for Bamboo and Rattan). He is involved in developing a number of ISO Standards for structural bamboo. Mahmud is an advocate of hybrid structures to have the least, if any, impact on future environment.
