Knowledge areas
RESEARCH FOCUS
Upgrading civil infrastructure is the core theme of Al-Ameri's research, which covers steel-concrete composite construction, improved construction materials, the durability of concrete in marine environments, mitigation of steel bar corrosion, and reusing waste materials in construction. His research provides evidence support incorporating recycling waste plastic, waste glass, waste carbon fibres, and fly ash in construction. He developed a novel low-carbon concrete (geopolymer concrete) containing recycled aggregate and construction and demolition waste. His work also used Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) to retrofit concrete structures and investigates the long-term performance of rubber-modified epoxy in CFRP and Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) bars in concrete. His research on reusing medical plastic waste in concrete has had a significant impact on the construction industry, waste management, environment protection, and health sector, and has received many national awards, such as Australia's Most Innovative Engineer (2018), Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Award (2018), and has been acknowledged in the Victorian State of Engineering Report (2019). One of Al-Ameri's research interests is the partial interaction behaviour of steel-concrete composite structures using steel decking and a slim flooring system. A new hybrid structural system with two-way novel steel decking has been developed in collaboration with industry partners.
