Biography

Riyadh Al-Ameri, PhD
FIEAust CPEng NER M.ASCE

Al-Ameri has received his PhD in Structural Engineering from Cardiff University (UK). He has a long years of mixed industrial and academic experience. Before joining Deakin in 2010, he took a senior role in the construction industry specifically in the design and consultation space. During his period at Deakin, he has participated effectively in industry projects, teaching and learning, research, and service. His research at Deakin is aligned with the infrastructure and environment theme and focusing on durability of concrete and composite structures, and hence, investigates the corrosion mitigation in such structures under harsh and marine environment. He also investigates new construction materials and techniques aiming to extend the servise life of new and existing structures, while incorporating various waste and industry by-products in concrete, such as epoxy treated chopped carbon fibres, waste plastic, waste glass, and fly ash. He also investigates the use of rubber-modified epoxy composites in structural retrofiting of concrete and composite structures.His research on reusing waste plastic and waste glass in concrete has significant impact on several sectors including construction industry, waste management, environment protection, health sector, and has received many national awards in 2018, while samples of the new concrete have been  included in the digital catalogue and displayed in the Fisher Fine Arts Library's new materials collection at the university of Pennsylvania (United States). Al-Ameri has been listed by Engineers Australia as Australia's Most Innovative Engineer (2018), recipient of Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Award (2018), Excellence in Industry Collaborations Award (2014), and Teaching Excellence Award (2012). He has published more that 100 articles from his research. Invited keynote speaker for many international conferences. Currently, fellow of Engineers Australia, Chartered Professional Engineer in Leadership and Engineering Management, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Building Services. Member of Standard Australia scoping committee BD-108, for the Design of Concrete Structures using Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Bars. He has taught a wide range of structural engineering subjects, supervised more than 35 PhD and MSc research students to a successful completion.

RESEARCH FOCUS


For more than twenty years I investigated the behaviour and strength of steel-concrete composite structures. My current research focused on the structural applications of composite materials and Carbone Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) for sustainable infrastructures. The partial interaction behaviour of RC beams and slabs retrofitted with multi-layer CFRP are investigated aiming to develop a new advanced material for retrofitting civil infrastructures.
