Deakin Genomics Centre

The Deakin Genomics Centre is a state-of-the-art DNA sequencing facility that provides small to commercial-scale support, training and services. Based in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at our Melbourne Burwood and Geelong Waurn Ponds campuses, the facility helps support our teaching programs and research activities.

Our focus

We support internal and external research in environmental, biodiversity, agricultural and aquaculture related projects. We also help support human, health and medically related projects. Through our use of high throughput, low cost and short and long read sequencing platforms, we seek to establish meaningful teaching, research and industry collaborations.

Equipment and technologies

Our centre offers a range of equipment and advanced technology that support projects and programs within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences.

Sequencing platforms

  • Illumina NovaSeq 6000
  • Oxford Nanopore
  • Illumina MiniSeq
  • Illumina MiSeq

Sample preparations services

  • DNA and RNA extraction
  • Whole genome libraries
  • RNA sequencing libraries
  • Whole exome libraries
  • MicroRNA/small RNA libraries
  • DNA methylation libraries
  • Amplicon panels

Microbiome sequencing services

  • Sample preparation
  • 16S metagenomics
  • ITS fungal metagenomics
  • Shotgun metagenomics
  • Custom eDNA sequencing
  • COI metagenomics

Training and education

We provide workshops on different kinds of bioinformatics analyses and pipelines, project supervisions and training for researchers and students undertaking graduate studies particularly in bioinformatics and computational biology.

We offer laboratory techniques training modules at our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) training lab at our Melbourne Burwood Campus. These include DNA/RNA extraction, quality control for NGS, microbiome metagenomics, whole genome library preparation and RNA sequence library preparation.

Study and research options

Research applications

Our facility has a number of research applications including:

  • genome and transcriptome assembly for non-model species
  • resequencing
  • skim sequencing for population and conservation genetic applications
  • functional genomes and the genetic basis of sex determination
  • SNP profiling
  • identification of diagnostic markers and association studies
  • molecular-based selective breeding for aquatic species and non-traditional agricultural species
  • biodiversity-related studies including evolutionary and molecular taxonomy, dietary studies, metabarcoding of environmental samples and environmental DNA.

Our available services

We provide bespoke sample preparation and bioinformatics services and support. This is offered through collaboration, fee-for-service or training partnerships. We can also offer low-cost, high-volume sequencing to suit any project needs using our onsite NovaSeq 6000 commercial scale sequencer.

If you have a need to assemble large and complex genomes for non-model organisms, you’ll benefit from our state-of-the-art approach using a combination of short and long read sequencing and custom bioinformatics pipelines.
