Information technology facilities

Learn using the latest technology in fully-equipped computer labs and facilities at our Melbourne Burwood and Geelong Waurn Ponds campuses. We’ve got hardware and equipment, specialised computer software in our discovery lab, plus an amazing robotics lab.

Life and environmental science facilities

Located across our Melbourne Burwood, Geelong Waterfront and Warrnambool campuses, we offer contemporary science labs, high-quality and specialised technologies and equipment, and renowned coastlines and environments.

Architecture and construction management facilities

Located at Deakin’s Geelong Waterfront Campus, our A+B Studio space encourages interactive learning, while the A+B Workshop is fully equipped with enviable access to the latest equipment and tools. The A+B Gallery is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over Corio Bay – the large gallery space is perfect for displaying and exhibiting your work.

A+B Studio

The A+B Studio is a 1050 square-metre space, 12.3 metres high and uninterrupted by posts, partitions or ceiling. The entire space is open and flexible to accommodate your creative projects.

A+B Workshop

Large enough for groups of 30 at a time, our A+B Workshop encourages students, academics and researchers to experiment with a range of innovative technology, materials and processes.

A+B Gallery

Overlooking Geelong's Corio Bay with amazing uninterrupted views, the A+B Gallery is a modern open-plan space providing students, staff and researchers the perfect area to exhibit their work, teach and meet.

The facilities help us to understand the design from conception to completion, as well as the processes involved in completing these projects.

Engineering facilities

Throughout your engineering course you’ll have access to our sector-leading facilities, including high-tech equipment, at our Melbourne Burwood and Geelong Waurn Ponds campuses.

High voltage lab

Visitors are dazzled by lightning bolts, but you can use the Tesla transformers in this impressive lab for electrical-related experiments. Deakin invested over $1 million setting up the lab.

Renewable and AusNet electrical engineering labs

Our renewable and AusNet electrical engineering labs house LabVolt modules, transformers, motors and generators to support your experiments.

Engineering fundamentals lab

Learn about the principles of physics using PASCO scientific equipment for physics experiments on friction, spring constants and projectile practicals, and Tecquipment Load Frames for bending and stress practicals.

The hands-on learning, and having the opportunity to put what you learn into practice as part of the course, is unique to Deakin.

Our connection to industry extends beyond curriculum and course design to include student placements and projects, research collaborations and our industry advisory group.

Design and product realisation engineering facilities

Facilities to help you turn digital designs and concepts into physical objects for prototyping, visualisation or end use.

Civil and environmental engineering facilities

Conduct a range of tests and research into materials, physical structures and objects, and use purpose-built systems to examine our environment.

  • Civil engineering labs Access soil characterisation equipment and a range of hydrology and hydraulic equipment.
  • Environmental engineering labs Experiment with water quality meters, balances, drying ovens and furnaces, plus spectrophotometers and total organic carbon analysers.
  • Structural engineering lab Use equipment for material and large-scale structural testing, durability testing of construction material, non-destructive evaluation of civil infrastructures and a mechanical workshop for sample preparation.
  • Fluid labs We’ve got the equipment you need to measure fluids, gases, aerosols, environmental emissions and plasmas.

Our specialised facilities, including the Data science lab and Cyber security lab, combine cutting-edge hardware and equipment with the latest development platforms, programming interfaces and software solutions. Delve into development languages and platforms, programming IDEs, cloud platforms, the latest VR/AR, embedded systems and robotics hardware.

Robotics and Internet of Things Lab

Robotics and Internet of Things Lab

Located at our Melbourne Burwood Campus, the Robotics and Internet of Things (RIoT) lab has the latest in computing, robotics and cyber-physical systems. You can also access professional software products, such as programming IDEs, games engines, VR and content development systems.

Emerging and Educational Technologies Innovation Lab

An immersive VR/AR technology research space with a wide range of sensory immersive research tools, including visual projection and headsets, locomotion, olfactory, auditory and haptic interfaces.

Makerspace

A space for IT students to expand their knowledge beyond IT software and systems into the physical world. Makerspace is an open facility for students to explore building prototypes using electronics, 3D printing, laser cutting, idea creation and product testing.

Life and environmental science facilities

Our campuses are surrounded by some the most diverse biological, marine and coastal ecosystems in Australia. You can assess the health of our environments, conduct sustainability assessments and survey wildlife. We also have advanced equipment and dedicated spaces for scientists, like our aquaculture facilities, biomedical and geographic information systems labs.

Crime Scene House

Located at our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, the Crime Scene House is a purpose-built simulation facility where you can develop your skills and knowledge in forensic science.

Marine vehicles and boats

Our fleet of vehicles include twin cabs, four-wheel drives, station wagons and a light rigid truck for towing our larger boats at Warrnambool. Our research vessel, Yolla, has multibeam sonar, GPS and seafloor mapping systems.

Perfect for fieldwork, our marine facilities are located near pristine coastal ecosystems at our Warrnambool Campus. You’ll have access to our Queenscliff Marine Science centre, plus an array of on-campus labs – and our research vessel, Yolla.

Our collaborative relationship with the Institute of Frontier Materials provides students with access to the nuclear magnetic resonance facility and a scanning electron microscope.
