Our research

The centre focuses on issues that inform and support the overall SME ecosystem. While our expertise examines the three pillars of SME productivity including investment, innovation, and human capital, its utilisation of multi-disciplinary experts allows us to broadly examine issues related to regulation, trade and sustainability of SME firms – including the well-being, resilience, and skills of SME owners.

Research, white papers and submissions

The centres research, policy and engagement work targets a range of non-academic beneficiaries.

  • The Small Business White Paper (2021) targets both federal and state governments and a range of SME related agencies via collaboration with the IPA and their advocacy.
  • The NHMRC project, Protecting the mental health of small-medium enterprise owners, and the DISER project, Counting on U, currently target small business owners, members of the three peak accounting bodies (CAANZ, CPA Australia, IPA), the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, and members of the financial planning associations.

Grants

2020

The IPA-Deakin SME Research Centre attracted a $2.24 million grant from the the Department of Innovation, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER). Announced by Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg during the federal budget on Tuesday 6 October 2020, the grant is part of the government’s COVID-19 Response Package to support mental health among small businesses. This grant primarily builds on the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project that the SME Research Centre is involved in with Beyond Blue, WorkSafe Victoria, the Institute for Public Accountants (IPA) and MHFA Australia.

2019

The IPA-Deakin SME Research Centre was awarded an NHMRC Category 1 research grant at the end of 2019. The CI’s on the grant are Andrew Noblet (Management) and Professors George Tanewski (Accounting/SME Research Centre).

The three-year grant funds a potentially high-impact intervention strategy to help up-skill accountants to deliver mental health first aid to their small-medium enterprise (SME) clients, who are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. The research team will work with Australia's three largest accounting bodies, as well as peak mental health and workplace health authorities, to assess a new approach to undertaking mental health first aid training via using different kinds of advisor-client relationship building strategies.

The grant is in partnership with the Institute for Public Accountants (IPA), Mental Health First Aid Australia, Beyond Blue and Worksafe Victoria. While the NHMRC’s contribution to the grant is $559,073, the total value of the grant, which includes the partner’s cash and in-kind contributions, is around $1.137 million.
