Advancing society and culture

Working towards a more inclusive and culturally diverse society

Discover how researchers in the Faculty of Arts and Education are translating globally significant research and ideas into innovative services, products, policies and capabilities.

Our research

Our research explores the diversity of society and the challenges within it. We integrate knowledge drawn from communities and our disciplinary capabilities to apply our findings in the public sphere.

Across the faculty, we consider:

  • how Australia’s cultural heritage contributes to society
  • how Australia’s political, economic and cultural connections to Asia are changing
  • how can we create an effective and resilient education system
  • how digital technologies impact creativity and lived experiences
  • how Australia’s media and creative industries support social belonging, place-making and equity.

Our research influences policy and legislation and improves organisations and businesses. It boosts creative, educational, sporting and technological capabilities in Australia and beyond.

Research highlights

Our faculty strategic research institutes, centres and groups are leaders in addressing the issues facing our society and culture.

The parliamentary careers project

The parliamentary careers project examines the career trajectories and professional challenges faced by members of parliament before, during and after their time in parliament. The project develops tools for parliaments to better support their current and former members.

Regulating AI and algorithms in the Asia Pacific

This project provides an overview of the policy landscape governing AI and algorithms in the Asia Pacific region and engages in dialogue with, and contributes to, regulatory practices in the West. It explores the ethical, legal and social issues, concerns and debates on AI and algorithms.

Supporting African heritage students

Developed in partnership with the Department of Education and Training, our research resulted in the development and creation of digital resources for school leaders and teachers to support the schooling experience of African-heritage students in Victorian state government schools.

What led me to pursue a PhD at Deakin over other universities, was the expertise of my supervisor, the financial support of a full scholarship, the invaluable resources and guidance, and the opportunity to learn from other academics.
