Regional and Remote Entry Scheme

Boost your chances of getting into your dream degree.

To help address workforce shortages in regional and remote areas, Deakin offer alternative entry pathways into relevant exercise and sport science, medical imaging, nutrition science, occupational therapy, social work and vision science/optometry courses.

Courses available through the Regional and Remote Entry Scheme

The Regional and Remote Entry Scheme aims to attract more regional and rural students into courses with a recognised workforce shortage in order to achieve the mission of addressing these identified workforce shortages and redressing workforce balance.

The schemes outlined below have separate VTAC codes and are available to eligible applicants to receive an adjustment of up to 10 aggregate points towards their entry score for admission.

Exercise and sport science

Exercise and sport science at Deakin is committed to producing world-class exercise and sport science students across regional, rural and remote areas of Australia.

The Regional and Remote Entry Scheme has a separate VTAC code offering an alternative entry pathway into the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus for the following courses:

Medical imaging

There is currently a shortage of qualified, skilled and experienced radiographers in regional Victoria and throughout regional Australia. The School of Medicine have introduced the Regional and Remote Entry Scheme to help address this shortage.

To be eligible you must meet the following admission criteria:

  • successful completion of a Senior Secondary Certification in Education with ATAR of at least 50 or equivalent (including Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL)
  • a study score of at least 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics; as well as a study score of at least 22 in Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics or a study score of at least 30 in Further Mathematics
  • the Regional and Remote selection criteria outline below (see 'Who is eligible').

The Entry Scheme has a separate VTAC code offering an alternative entry pathway into the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus for the following course:

Nutrition science

Nutritionists mostly work in group or community settings and often have a focus on community and population health. There is an increasing need in regional and remote areas for nutritionists.

Our combined nutrition science degrees with commerce or exercise and sport science produce multi-skilled graduates that can offer valuable support to regional communities. The Regional and Remote Entry Scheme has a separate VTAC code and offers an alternate entry pathway for students in these communities for the following courses:

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapists enhance people’s quality of life at home, work, and in the community. They work collaboratively with people of all ages, enabling them to lead active, healthy and productive lives.

Workforce shortages mean there is a growing demand in regional, remote and rural Victoria and across Australia for qualified occupational therapists. Deakin has introduced the Regional and Remote Entry Scheme for this course to help address the health gap between these communities and those living in urban centres.

The Regional and Remote Entry Scheme has a separate VTAC code offering an alternative entry pathway into the Geelong Waterfront and Warrnambool campuses for the following course:

Social work

Deakin's Bachelor of Social Work can equip you with the knowledge and skills to enhance the wellbeing of others through an understanding of policy, socioeconomic factors and social equity issues. Gain the skills to work effectively with individuals, families and communities to address key factors causing inequality.

The Regional and Remote Entry Scheme has a separate VTAC code offering an alternative entry pathway into the Geelong Waterfront and Warrnambool campuses for the following course:

Vision science / optometry

Around 71% of optometrists are based in capital cities, compared to the Australian average of 62% across all occupations. This leads to workforce shortages in regional Australia, which our Regional and Remote Entry Scheme is designed to address.

To be eligible you must meet the following admission criteria:

    • successful completion of a Senior Secondary Certification in Education with ATAR of at least 50 or equivalent (including Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL)
