Yes. Deakin GEM can be accessed securely from any browser and device, whether on campus or off.

Check your internet connection and browser first (Microsoft Edge is recommended). If the issue continues, you can request IT support.

Deakin GEM is provided to support a range of tasks and activities. By accessing Deakin GEM, you acknowledge and accept that your use is subject to the Student Rights and Responsibilities (for students), the Code of Conduct (for staff), and the Information and Communications Technology Acceptable Use Policy (for all users), as well as any related procedures.

Deakin GEM uses artificial intelligence to generate responses. While it aims to provide helpful and relevant information, responses may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate and should not be relied on as a sole source of information. It is important to ensure you review and verify information. For official information, refer to the student website or contact Student Central for specific advice or support.

Deakin GEM is Deakin's secure, generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tool. It’s hosted within Deakin’s managed cloud environment on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Australia, providing a secure way to explore and learn about AI.

Deakin GEM helps build capability while keeping privacy, data protection and intellectual-property security strong.

You can turn on web search by selecting ‘Integrations’ in the chat box and enabling Web Search. This allows Deakin GEM to access information from the internet when responding to your prompts.

Because it retrieves real-time data, responses may take a little longer to appear than standard Deakin GEM replies. The feature operates within Deakin’s secure environment.

No. Deakin GEM does not need to be trained on Deakin unit content, internal documents or university systems.

Instead, GEM accesses relevant university information when it is needed through secure connections. For example, if a user asks about courses or units, GEM can use connections to retrieve the relevant information from a university source such as the Deakin website.

This approach allows GEM to access current, available information from existing sources, rather than embedding information in the model itself.

Some of the resources GEM uses to retrieve information are:

• university policies

• IT Help
• Library
• Student Central
• The Handbook
• The student website.

No generative AI tool guarantees accuracy.

Responses may contain errors, outdated information or oversimplified explanations. You are responsible for reviewing and verifying any content before relying on it.

You can now upload your own documents directly into Deakin GEM. This saves you time when working with:

• complex information you need to summarise or analyse.
