My Experience in Indonesia
My time in Indonesia this year will total around eight months. I began with a semester exchange at Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya, where I studied Law and International Relations units. I loved the exchange student lifestyle, balancing study, travel and making friendships with people from around the world. Having the opportunity to explore Indonesia while studying was incredibly rewarding.
After the exchange, I spent two months in Yogyakarta, my favourite destination, completing an independent intensive language program at Wisma Bahasa. Learning Indonesian was such a rewarding challenge!
I am currently completing a Law WIL internship at Yang & Co, a corporate and dispute resolution law firm in Jakarta. It has been an amazing opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to legal practice in another jurisdiction and experience what it's like to work internationally.
A Memorable Trip
During my time in Indonesia, I’ve visited a total of 4 active volcanoes! One of my most memorable travel experiences was a sunrise jeep tour at Mount Bromo. We departed at 11pm and returned around midday the next day but the sleep deprivation was worth it! Watching the sunrise from an incredible viewpoint and hiking up to the crater was definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
How I Chose My Study Abroad Opportunity
My decision to study abroad was quite spontaneous. After completing the Indonesian Law and Governance Study Tour run by Dr Sven Gallasch, I knew I wanted to return and was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to study at Universitas Airlangga the next year. While short term programs are an amazing insight into a different country, I would 100% recommend studying abroad longer term, especially in the Asia-Pacific region as funding options are super accessible.
Funding
One of the biggest benefits of studying in the Asia–Pacific region is the financial support available. Several other students who I went on exchange with received New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants of $10,000, which goes a long way in Indonesia (from 2026, this funding is expected to increase to $15,000!). While I was not eligible as I had already received the grant twice, I was still able to receive funding through the $6,000 Destination Australia Cheung Kong Grant.
How This Experience Added to My Studies
Besides earning credit points, this experience has added so much value to my personal and professional growth. Academically, studying and working in a different legal system has broadened my perspective and deepened my cultural understanding. It’s also enhanced my employability as it shows that I can adapt to new environments and navigate cross-border challenges.
On a personal level, through living abroad I've become open to new experiences and opportunities, even when they seem daunting. The only challenge I’ll be facing next is affording my next trip!
