Dilia is an international student from Timor-Leste.
The opportunity to participate in the Hanyang Winter School was one of the best and most unforgettable moments for me. I will definitely recommend my acquaintances to take part in the exchange program.
Did you go on any memorable trips to explore your host country or maybe a nearby country?
As part of the Hanyang Winter School program, we went on a ski trip to Mona Yongpyong Resort. It was my first time skiing, making the experience even more exciting. We stayed there for two days and one night. On the first day, I participated in a ski lesson, and in the evening, we had free activities. On the second day, we had the option to take another ski lesson or enjoy our free time. My friends and I decided to take the gondola up to the highest peak, where the view was breathtaking. In the afternoon, we returned to Seoul. My first ski trip was an incredibly fun and memorable experience.
How did you make friends and what sort of things did you do together?
The first friend I made was at the airport, we shared a pick-up car to Hanyang University, which sparked our first conversation. I also made friends in class, as we bonded over shared interests.
Our favourite things to do were exploring Korean food and culture, going café hopping, shopping, and, of course, trying out the latest trend photobooths!
What is the one big thing you will always remember from your experience? Or one big lesson that you learnt?
I will never forget the orientation day at Hanyang University. It was truly an amazing experience. That day, we were guided by the Hanyang Global Lions (student ambassadors) to Paiknam Music Hall, walking uphill for 30 minutes. There were more than 600 students in the hall. We ended the orientation with a silent disco, which felt like living out my Korean drama dream!
I learned that despite being an introvert, I can make friends easily and build connections with new people. I discovered a different side of myself that I never expected.
What motivated you to travel further as an international student?
I am always eager for new experiences and challenges. By joining this study abroad program, I had the opportunity to explore another part of the world as a student. It allowed me to gain insight into different education systems and compare them with those in Australia and my home country.
I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and meet new people. Through this journey, I was able to learn so much from culture, history, and the people whom I met in South Korea. This was one of the best decision I have ever made during my degree. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, go and see the world.
