I stayed in Exeter, which is about three hours south-west of London by train. It’s a small university city with lots of hills. Exeter itself has almost everything you need, and most places are within walking distance with good public transport options. I was there during winter, so it was pretty cold at first, but it warmed up over time. Exeter has a lively nightlife and plenty of historic sites to explore (it even has an IKEA).
During my semester abroad, a typical day would usually start with me waking up and making breakfast. I’d often call my friends and family back home while eating. Usually after that, if I had a class, I’d meet up with my other friends and walk to university together. We’d have classes and often go out to get food and study a bit in the library. After that, we’d head home, and I’d usually relax or do some studying. In the evenings, my accommodation had a gym, so I’d fit in a workout, and I’d then often have dinner with my roommates. We’d chat or have dessert until it was time to call it a day. I’d check in with my family in the evening before heading off to bed.
I’m a very shy person by nature, and I knew going on exchange would be a challenge for me. I found making friends one of the hardest parts, but definitely the most rewarding. When I first arrived in Exeter, the university hosted many events for new students, which really helped me meet my fellow students and build connections. I was also able to connect through clubs and classes. Additionally, I made really good friends with my roommates, of whom I had 11, and since we all shared a kitchen, we saw each other quite often. I also met some of my fellow exchange students at the Deakin preparation session, and I’m now really good friends with them. With my group of friends, we’d often go out for brunch and dinner, and we’d also just catch up randomly since most of them lived within a five-minute walk. I also had the opportunity to travel across the UK with them and have some incredible experiences.
My one piece of advice is to put yourself out there and go on exchange. It might feel like you're doing this all alone, but there are so many people here to support you, and once you make some friends, the experience becomes amazing..
Overall, during the four months I was away, I spent $20,000. I also did some travelling in Europe, which added a significant amount to the costs. I was fortunate to use the OS-HELP loan along with support from my wonderful parents.
