The Library and your timetable

The Library

No matter what or where you study, the Library will be play an important role in your time at Deakin. Locate the Library during one of your first visits to campus, or explore everything it has to offer online.

Explore the Library

The Library offers a wide range of resource beyond books, journals, articles and resources, including:

  • a variety of study spaces such as bookable rooms for group work and reset rooms for neurodiverse students
  • extended opening hours during assessment and exam periods so you have a quiet place to study
  • study support guides, videos and modules such as the GenAI Hub and the First Nations Hub, so you can improve your study and research skills in particular areas
  • a team of dedicated staff including librarians who can help you locate the resources you need for a particular subject area of research project.

The Library website also has a handy chat feature in the bottom right-hand corner – it's the quickest way to get a real-time answer to a question about the Library and its services.

Your timetable

At Deakin, you build your timetable in STAR (which stands for Student Timetable Allocation and Registration).

For both on-campus and online units, you will use STAR to enter your timetable preferences and confirm your timetable. You will receive an email when STAR is open and it’s time to build your timetable.

Learn more about how to access and use STAR

provisional timetable is also available each study period to give you an idea of when classes, seminars and other learning experiences are scheduled, which will help you plan ahead (the provisional timetable is subject to change).

Please note: some online units will not have their learning activities listed in STAR. Information for these units will be available on your CloudDeakin unit site one week before the start of trimester.

Reading lists and textbooks

For each unit you are studying, you will have a reading list. The reading list includes compulsory and recommended reading resources, including books, book chapters, journal articles, websites and media. You may also have a prescribed textbook.

You will find your reading list and prescribed textbook information in your unit site on DeakinSync during OWeek.

You can also access your reading list on the Library website: simply enter your unit code in the search bar to see your readings for a unit.

You can use the Find Textbooks page to find out which textbooks are prescribed and/or recommended for a unit and then borrow them from the Library.

Buying textbooks

If you can't borrow your textbook from the Library or would prefer to purchase your own copy, you can buy your textbooks online. Deakin does not sell textbooks directly: you can purchase them online in both print and e-book format from either the publisher or a book e-retailer. Remember to check you have the correct edition listed for your unit.

You can often buy second-hand textbooks at a discounted price, but you should always be careful of any potential scams when not buying from official sources.
