Lived and Learned
Lived and Learned: Deakin students sharing their stories of hope and resilience is Deakin's lived-experience storytelling project. Students have courageously shared their experiences of navigating mental health challenges to inspire hope, resilience and healing. We thank the students who have generously given permission to share their stories below. In some instances, the names of those included have been altered to protect the identity of the individuals involved.
Content warning: the stories below may include discussion of sensitive topics such as sexual abuse, disordered eating, racism, gender-based violence and suicidal ideation. If you find any of this content distressing, support is available at Deakin.

Share your story to support your student community
Sharing lived experience can help challenge stigma, support personal growth, and offer connection and hope to other students. If you have a personal story about navigating mental health challenges that you would consider sharing, email us below. Further opportunities to hear from and engage with our student lived-experience storytellers will be available at upcoming Deakin Health and Wellbeing events.
Need to talk to someone?
Conversations about mental health and mental illness can sometimes be difficult, and reading about other people going through the same things as you might be confronting. But you don't need to face things alone. We offer a range of support services, from articles you can read, to psychologists and counsellors you can talk to in-person or online.
