Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE)

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE)

What is LANTITE?

In July 2016, the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) was introduced by the Australian Government to ensure that all ITE graduates possess personal literacy and numeracy skills in the top 30 per cent of the population.

The Australian Government requires students enrolled in an Initial Teacher Education degree to pass LANTITE before they are eligible to graduate. At Deakin University, LANTITE is a course requirement for all ITE students enrolled in a primary or secondary undergraduate and postgraduate qualification, and you must pass these tests in order to graduate from your degree.

From 2024, students who are required to undertake the LANTITE are expected to attempt the test before the end of the first year of their Australian ITE qualification.

The testing process is managed by the Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) and is part of the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) teacher registration process. All details, including test window dates and how to register for the test, are on the ACER website.

Alternative standard to LANTITE

From 2024, the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is permitting recognition of First Nations language proficiency by the relevant cultural authority as an acceptable alternative standard to LANTITE.

Therefore, anyone who is proficient in an Australian First Nations Language can use this as an acceptable alternative standard to LANTITE.

Students who meet the criteria for this alternative approach to LANTITE should obtain a letter from within their community, stating the Indigenous Language in which they are proficient.

Please note that modern post–colonial dialects (such as Koorie English) can be accepted as an Australian First Nations language.

Additionally, formal qualifications in a First Nations language are an acceptable form of acknowledgement of proficiency.

LANTITE Support

The School of Education provides a wide range of literacy and numeracy supports to all ITE students, whether meeting the standard through the LANTITE tests or through First Nations language proficiency.
