The AWL Employability Sequence
The AWL Employability Sequence is a collection of new undergraduate units delivered by the Faculty of Arts and Education. These AWL-coded units, in both classroom and internship/placement settings, are designed to develop your career thinking, advance your capabilities both in and beyond your discipline area of study, and support you to pursue new experiences in real-world environments.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal unit sequence for me?
The AWL Employability Sequence is designed to be completed progressively throughout your degree, to support your career development at each stage of study. It is not designed to be completed in a single trimester, as your career thinking may change over the course of your studies. The recommended sequence is to complete AWL100 Your Future Direction in your second trimester of study, one of the Level 2 electives in your second year, and a Level 3 elective in your third year (or part-time equivalent).
Can I complete more than three units?
Yes! You can complete additional AWL Employability Sequence units as electives, subject to space in your course. You may, for example, wish to enrol in a placement unit following your completion of AWL302 Your Professional Story.
Do I have to complete an internship?
No, you do not have to complete an internship. You can chart your own course through the AWL Employability Sequence, and complete classroom units only. However, you are strongly encouraged to pursue internship opportunities both locally and internationally throughout your degree, as real-world experience correlates strongly with improved career outcomes.
How do I source an internship?
Excellent question! The Arts & Education Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Team has two key resources to assist you with understanding how the internship process works, and how to source an internship that is the right fit for you. You can read the How to Secure an Internship webpage or take the Pre-Internship Program, accessed via CloudDeakin (see the helpsheet (PDF, 110.9 KB) for assistance).
How many internships can I complete?
Subject to space in your course, you can complete up to three placement units from the AWL Employability Sequence. Please refer to the units table above when planning your course map to include internships.
I would like to speak with someone about my options.
Great! You can book a consultation with a member of the WIL Team to discuss your options in closer detail. Before doing so, please ensure you have an up-to-date course map from Student Central (i.e. provided in the last six months).
