Consultancy Experience allows you to develop an understanding of the processes and skills required to be a consultant in a business environment. By undertaking this unit, you will practice ethical behaviour and develop your problem solving, self-management and interpersonal skills.

How to enrol

To enrol in this unit, you must firstly apply for and secure a position in one of the approved programs listed on this page. Applications consist of completing a short form and ranking your preferences from the available WIL programs in that trimester (note, not every program will run in each trimester).

If your application is successful, you will be enrolled in this unit by the Faculty WIL Team. Enrolment will occur 2–3 weeks prior to the start of trimester. You cannot self-enrol in advance.

Australian Business Consultancy (ABC) program

In this program students work in small consultancy teams to explore and develop a strategy in response to a specific business problem. The problem will be provided by Australian organisations from a range of sectors, sizes and locations.

Each week you will be engaged in a combination of program tailored content, hands-on project work, independent and team meetings, and mentor sessions with the program leader. You will also have three opportunities to liaise with your client (initial interview, mid-project review and final presentation/pitch day).

Under the guidance and supervision of an industry program leader, you will liaise with the organisation to understand the nature of the problem, their requirements and capabilities. The consultancy teams will work together to develop and deliver their assigned organisation a final report and presentation of suggested strategies.

Business Development Clinic

In this program you will work in consultancy teams with a small to medium sized business to grow their profitability, using the 7-Levers of Business Framework.

Each week you will engage in a combination of program tailored content, hands-on project work, independent and team meetings and mentor sessions with renowned entrepreneur, award-winning author, marketer, and Professor of Practice, Pete Williams.

You will have the opportunity to liaise with the client on a regular basis to understand the nature of their business, the market they are operating in and how you can improve their profitability. The consultancy teams will work together to develop and deliver their assigned organisation a final report and presentation of suggested strategies.

Unit details, eligibility and assessments

Consultancy Experience is available to undergraduate and postgraduate students, who are eligible to use a WIL unit towards their degree. Please visit the Handbook for further unit information and key trimester dates.

It is your responsibility to ensure that taking a WIL unit contributes towards your course requirements, and will not prevent you from meeting your course rules. Please contact Student Central if you are unsure.
