Depending on the time of year and nature of the placement, the WIL team can support with role posting, promotion and shortlisting. Interviews are at the discretion of the host company.

The WIL team post unpaid roles on the DeakinTALENT Jobs & Internships Board. Paid roles can be posted directly if you are comfortable using the online platform.

The WIL team can shortlist for dedicated Deakin student placements only. Students will need to apply directly to the organisation for roles open to multiple universities.

If you have your own online recruitment or jobs platform, then there is no requirement for Deakin role posting and the team can share your application links as part of our weekly student communications.

A full recruitment cycle from initial application to the student commencing can take up to 4-6 weeks. For a shorter duration, you can accept student applications directly for rolling recruitment and early selection.

The organisation must also be able to provide a suitable supervisor. Students need to be supervised by a professional currently employed in a role related to the student’s tasks. For example, a student coding computer software for an organisation would need to be supervised by a professional whose primary role in your organisation is related to software design. Supervisors should be able to offer students access to feedback, guidance and mentoring.

Unpaid placements must meet strict Deakin and Fair Work Australia requirements. If your organisation or proposed placement does not meet these requirements, you can still bring on Deakin students in a paid casual or part-time position.

Paid positions (not for credit) can be posted at any time directly on the DeakinTALENT Jobs & Internships Board where students will apply directly to you.

There will be no need for any formal reports, but all placements will require the supervisor to complete online feedback at the middle and end of the placement, where progress can be monitored, and any issues addressed.

From time to time you may receive a direct request from one of our students seeking a placement in your organisation. We would be delighted if you could discuss the possibility with the student and provide a practical and professional placement opportunity. You will need to advise the student to contact the sebe-wil@deakin.edu.au. All placements are required to be approved prior to the student commencing the placement experience.

Your first point of contact will be your the SEBE WIL team who will be able to advise or pass any concerns to the relevant academic staff. Please email sebe-wil@deakin.edu.au.

Whilst it’s recommended that you do, students can work unpaid as WIL experiences form part of their study. Unpaid work must not exceed a maximum of 160 hours.

If you are looking for a longer-term arrangement that will exceed 160 hours, then a paid employment relationship must be entered into.

No. In return for offering practical experience and mentoring to the student, Deakin provides all relevant support to our partner organisations.

All students who undertake a WIL placement for credit with your organisation are insured by Deakin's Personal Accident Insurance scheme for the duration of their placement. This includes any injuries they may receive or that may occur. It also covers public liability and professional indemnity for any damage/injuries that they may cause.

Insurance cover is provided under the following policies:

• General and Products Liability (including liability to Host Employers).
• Professional Indemnity.
• Personal Accident and International Travel.

Employers will be required to provide WorkCover insurance to the student.

If the position is unpaid, Deakin's insurance will cover students on approved placements. Please see Insurance for students on placement or work experience for further information.

It may be reasonable for the work completed by a Deakin student to remain the intellectual property of the host company, based on the nature of your business, and the work they will undertake. If you have concerns around Intellectual Property, contact the WIL team for guidance.

Some students may require workplace adjustments to allow them to perform the job safely; have equal opportunity in recruitment processes; experience equitable terms and conditions and maximise productivity

Most adjustments relate to flexible time fractions and work from home options. The Deakin Disability Resource Centre (DRC) offers support and training to students and organisations if workplace adjustments are required.

It may be reasonable to ask the student to sign a confidentiality agreement based on the nature of your business, and the work they will undertake. If you have concerns around non-disclosure or confidentiality arrangements, the WIL team can provide support.

Students must be offered a safe and inclusive environment to work in. The Fair Work Act 2009 outlines the requirements of student placements.

It includes provisions aimed at protecting students from exploitation. In short, the Act prevents students being used as ‘free labour’, an issue that has historically concerned employers and universities alike.

The Act provides an exemption for where the student is participating in a university approved opportunity not exceeding the agreed hours, this is a valid work opportunity in line with the legislation.
