Deakin GEM is a free, Deakin-supported genAI tool available to all students. You can access Deakin GEM anytime to support your learning, whether you're on campus or online.
What is Deakin GEM for?
The tool provides you with structured access to a large language model (LLM) in a university-supported, secure environment. You can you can explore ideas, develop genAI literacy and confidence, and practise thoughtful, responsible use as part of your studies.
- Build your AI skills: gain practical experience using AI tools in a university-supported environment, developing skills that are increasingly important in study and work.
- Learn responsibly: explore how genAI works and how to use it thoughtfully and ethically in your academic context.
- Test and refine ideas: use genAI to brainstorm, clarify concepts and organise your thinking — while ensuring your final work reflects your own understanding and meets unit requirements.
- Build confidence: whether you’re new to AI or already experimenting with it, Deakin GEM gives you structured access to genAI as part of your studies.

New in Deakin GEM: two new features added
Deakin GEM is getting smarter! We've added two new capabilities to make it even more useful for your everyday work.
1. File upload
You can now upload your own documents directly into Deakin GEM.
Important: Please do not upload personal, confidential, or sensitive information to Deakin GEM.
2. Deakin information and content
Deakin GEM can now access trusted Deakin information including Student and Library websites, IT Help, Student Central and Library knowledge articles, the Deakin Handbook and university policies and procedures.
