Study tours with Health

Faculty study tours are an alternative way to undertake a unit in your degree intensively overseas. These programs are 2-3 weeks in duration and involve academic, industry and cultural activities at a partner university abroad.

While study tours from the schools of Psychology, Medicine, Exercise and Nutrition Science and Health and Social Development run every second year, multiple group tours from Nursing and Midwifery run every year.

Things to consider before studying overseas

Funding	How will you fund this? Consider the inclusions and exclusions in the program fee, if any. What types of funding are you eligible for? Read information on OS-Help loan and WIL Student Support Scheme. Will you need to cover rent while you are away? Will you miss out on income from your part-time/casual work? Will your Austudy payments continue while you are abroad?
Your level of travel experience	Have you gained enough overseas travel experience to help you navigate challenges that you may face abroad?
Visa requirements	Each country has different visa requirements. It is important you check what they are before committing to the placement. If your flight includes stopovers, check whether you will need a visa for the stopover destination too. Some visas must be applied from your home country which can add a layer of difficulty for international students. You will also need to consider visa processing times. Visa applications can take anywhere between a few weeks to a few months to be processed. Read the visa application instructions carefully and promptly provide all the documents requested to prevent delays in your visa application process. While Deakin cannot provide specific visa advice, you can check the Smartraveller website for further details. Contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting for visa advice specific to your citizenship and circumstances.
Dietary requirements	It is important to remember that not all countries have the same variety of diets as we do in Australia and that they may not understand what your dietary requirement means. In some countries, a 'vegetarian' meal will contain seafood or white meat. You need to do your research and be prepared to explain your dietary requirements. It might be a good idea to learn a few key words in the local language to aid communication and, if you are worried, it is always sensible to take a supply of snacks as back-up!
Disability and/or medical conditions and Learning Access Plan (LAP)	We take our duty of care to each student seriously. If you have a disability or medical conditions – let us know. The more you tell us, the more we can support you. Be it, asthma, anxiety, diabetes, depression, or a hearing impairment - let us know so that we can figure out how best to support you. If you have a Learning Access Plan in place relating to a health condition or a disability, you might want to check in with your Disability Resource Centre Liaison Officer to see how it may be adjusted for an overseas learning experience.
Vaccinations	Check whether you need to get vaccinations for the country that you will be visiting. Some countries require proof of vaccination before they can let you in to the country.
LGBTQI+ and women travellers	All travellers face risks overseas. Research the type of risks LGBTQI+ and women travellers may face in your destination country. Different countries can be at different stages in their journey to equal rights and it can come as a shock that certain countries still have quite confronting laws in place. We urge you to do some research on this yourself. See what you can learn about local laws on the Smartraveller and International SOS websites in relation to the countries you will be visiting. It is important to think about what your comfort levels are. Talk to family and friends and of course; you can always talk to us at Deakin if you are unsure.
Language barriers	English may not be widely spoken in the destination to which you are travelling. Therefore, it will be helpful to consider how this impacts your day-to-day living. You may wish to consider learning a few helpful words in the local language or downloading translation apps to assist you with completing everyday tasks, such as shopping for groceries or ordering food.
