Tax File Number (TFN) information

If you’re an eligible domestic student, accepting a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) at Deakin, or wish to use HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP or SA-HELP, you’ll need a Tax File Number (TFN).

What is a TFN and how can I apply for one?

A TFN is a unique number the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) provides and is your personal reference number for the taxation system. It is free to apply for a TFN.

Your TFN is:

  • required to apply for a HELP loan
  • unique to you - you cannot use someone else's TFN
  • an important part of your tax records
  • an important part of your identity - make sure you keep it secure
  • yours for life - even if you change your name, employment or address.

If you wish to access a HELP loan for your studies, you must provide your TFN before the relevant census date. Therefore, we recommend you apply as soon as possible as it can take up to 28 days after your application/interview to receive your TFN.

Australian residents can apply:

Information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is available on the ATO website.

What if I don't receive my TFN before census date?

If you don't receive your TFN by census date, you will need to provide a certified copy of your Certificate of Application (if you applied directly to the ATO) or your Australia Post application receipt (provided to you at your interview), to avoid disruption to your enrolment. This document can be submitted by completing a current students online enquiry form.

You must have attended your Australia Post interview prior to the relevant census date to access a HELP loan in the current study period. Australia Post will provide you with an application receipt which can be used as a Certificate of Application for your TFN.

When you receive your TFN, you must immediately update your Commonwealth Assistance form in StudentConnect.
