Fellowship program

The School of Nursing and Midwifery Fellowship Program is offered in a number of health care organisations in Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool.

A Fellowship allows you to complete the majority of your clinical learning for the entire degree in one hospital or health network. This enables you to become socialised to a specific hospital environment with the aim of enhancing the clinical learning experience, and employment prospects with that organisation.

Benefits of joining a fellowship

  • Some clinical partners only provide enough clinical places for their fellowship program, which means that once the fellowship is full, you may not have the opportunity to attend clinical placement at that organisation.
  • Fellowship students are at an advantage when applying for a graduate year, and are highly sought after by hospitals. All our fellowship partners shortlist their fellowship students for interview when applying for graduate years.
  • Uncertainty over clinical placement dates and locations can be stressful for some students. Fellowship students are pre-allocated to their fellowship organisation for clinical placement. That means that you know when, and where, you are going for your clinical placement long before other students.
  • Returning to the same organisation for clinical placements allows you to hit the ground running, and get the most out of your clinical experience. This also allows you to build relationships with staff in the organisation, and take advantage of learning opportunities that non-fellowship students may not have access to.

Who can apply for fellowships and how?

Fellowships begin in your first year and are primarily designed for students undertaking a 3-year nursing degree, either the Bachelor of Nursing or the Bachelor of Nursing (Clinical Leadership).

Students at Burwood and Waterfront enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery can apply to undertake a fellowship with Western Health.

Students enrolled in the BN/Bachelor Public Health and Health Promotion or the BN/Bachelor of Psychological Science, or students on an alternate pathway due to credit for prior learning, may still apply.

Application information is made available to first year students upon commencement.
