DeakinAir
DeakinAir is an online video platform that essentially allows you to browse and view videos relevant to your learning at Deakin.
Your unit chair may encourage you to create a video as part of an assignment or assessable item. DeakinAir provides a neat mechanism for you to contribute your own video content to teaching sites in DeakinSync and other web-based products. You can make short, snappy camera recordings that you may be encouraged to introduce yourself to your tutors or lecturers, offer reflections on topical interests, or simply deliver video assignments as the teaching cycle unfolds.
If you have a video assignment that you need to share with your tutor or lecturer, DeakinAir can help by offering an easy and intuitive interface by which to upload your own content.
Although contributing and managing content is not supported on mobile devices, browsing and playback is still available.
DeakinAir is made available to Deakin staff and enrolled students for educational use only and not for personal or commercial use.
You must not use DeakinAir for any purpose or upload any content to DeakinAir that is illegal, unlawful, confidential or in breach of Deakin University's legislation, policies and procedures–, including, but not limited to, Deakin's various Information and Communications Technology Acceptable Use Policy.
You must comply with all applicable international, Commonwealth, State and local laws and regulations. The videos stored in DeakinAir will be stored by Kaltura on servers in the United States.
You must comply with the DeakinAir copyright and privacy statement.
Deakin reserves the right to investigate suspected violations of these conditions. Deakin may, in it’s sole discretion, remove infringing content from DeakinAir, provide warnings to you, or suspend or terminate your access to DeakinAir.

Before you start creating a video:
- If recording with a phone, please hold the phone sideways.
- Record your video in mp4 (H264) format if possible and at max 720p (720p because of final file size).
- Use Windows Movie Maker (Windows Live Movie Maker) or iMovie if possible, to edit the video.
- Export/Save your edited movie in mp4 (H264) format if possible. Windows Live Movie Maker will export as WMV.
- Always use as many default settings as possible. Changing video settings can easily result in corrupted videos.
Before uploading to DeakinAir:
- Ensure that you check your internet speed which will determine how long it takes to upload your video. For example, at 1.5Mbps it takes about 9 minutes to upload 100 MB, about 52 minutes at 256Kbps to upload 100MB file.
- If your Internet speed is slow, try:
- a different (faster) internet connection/network e.g. Deakin on-campus or local library
- reducing the size (dimensions) of the video and re-encode (export/save/convert) the video.
Note: If your upload speed is below 1Mbps, we recommend that you only upload up to 200Mb per video.
Software to convert your video:
If your video did not process/convert after successfully uploading to DeakinAir, use the following software to convert your video.

If necessary, playlists can easily be created to segment longer video sequences or group similar subject matter.DeakinAir accepts all common video, audio and image formats in all resolutions. For best results with video, we recommend preparing videos in 1280x720 pixels and using the H.264 video codec at about 4000 kb/s. File properties (metadata) - it is important to give your video file a logical, meaningful name, who created it, a brief description and very importantly, some logical, meaningful tags (separated by comma). - Fill in the metadata required for each video.
- When metadata has been added select the Save icon at the bottom of the page. You can view your video by using the Go to Media icon or go to a list of your videos by using the Go to My Media icon.

Note: The embed code is 'context sensitive' i.e. depending on the type and size of player that you select, the embed code will automatically adjust accordingly. There are 3 types of media player available:
- basic streamed format with no download option (default
- basic streamed player with download option
- basic streamed player with Copyright 'bumper video' that is automatically added to your video in the event that you have included any 3rd party or broadcast content.
