Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a special security measure that you can add to your online accounts. Instead of just using a password, it requires you to input a combination of security information – such as something you know (PIN or secret question), something you have (card number or token) or something you are (fingerprint or other biometric data) – in order to gain access to your account.

You may already be using MFA. For example, when you receive an authentication code via SMS after entering your password to log into an online account, you’re using MFA.

It’s a simple way to make your online accounts more secure. It makes it much harder for someone other than you to log into your account without permission.

Deakin enforces MFA to protect all our accounts and data. We use an app called Duo Mobile to perform MFA to verify your identity when you log in to all Deakin applications (in addition to your username and password). You can download Duo Mobile and set up MFA on your devices now.

If you don’t have your DUO Mobile registered device with you, you can still access your Deakin accounts securely. On any device, open a web browser and go to the MFA Self Service webpage. Further information is available in this knowledge base article.

You can also turn on MFA for your banking services, LinkedIn, Gmail and social media accounts. Instructions are available on the Australian Cyber Security Centre website.
