Working and your visa

Preparing for study

Working and your visa

As an international student at Deakin, you can work part-time according to the conditions of your visa.

Whether you need extra income or are looking for study-related work experience, we can help you find a job and make sure that you have a positive working experience.

You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during trimesters on your student visa. During the breaks between trimesters, you can work as much as you want. Make sure to balance your study and work commitments by:

  • maintaining your course enrolment
  • ensuring satisfactory course attendance
  • ensuring satisfactory course progress.

You can search for a job using our DeakinTALENT job board, or external job boards such as Seek.

You can also read more about your rights at work in Australia here. You have the right to formal pay slips, safe conditions and minimum pay when you are at work.

Most employers in Australia will ask you to submit an up-to-date resume when you apply for a role, along with a concise cover letter explaining why you’re a good candidate for the job. If an employer is impressed by your application, you’ll most likely be invited to an in-person interview before they decide whether to hire you. If you need help writing a resume or cover letter, or want some advice about job interviews, take a look at DeakinTALENT’s resources.
