Preparing for study

English language for study

If English is your second language, your skills will develop naturally as you live and learn in Australia. Most Australians speak English, and as a multicultural nation, you will hear different languages spoken, particularly in cities like Melbourne and Geelong.

Strong English language skills will help you in your studies and day-to-day life in Australia.

If you want to improve your English skills for personal, study-related or professional reasons, you can study a course at the Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI). DUELI also has online resources you can use to practice and improve your English language skills before you arrive in Australia.

But if you’re looking to further develop your English proficiency while you study, we encourage you to join the English language development sessions available to you at Deakin.

Developing Strategies for English Language Learners is a free 4-week program designed for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. In this program, you’ll learn more about strategies you can use to develop your academic English while you complete your degree.

The program is delivered online and includes:

  • virtual resources and activities
  • weekly Zoom seminar sessions
  • opportunities to get personalised feedback on your written English
  • one-on-one, ongoing support after the program ends with a Language and Learning Adviser.

You’ll also be introduced to the range of academic support services available to you at Deakin.

This program runs several times a year, so we recommend you register now.
