Become a peer mentor and help other students

Peer mentors are experienced Deakin students who help other students to succeed.

Become a peer mentor and help other students

Do you remember feeling confused when you started at Deakin?

Deakin offers a range of peer mentor programs to help students settle in to uni life and guide them in their first year. Becoming a peer mentor is an opportunity to make a difference to others, and mentoring has multiple benefits.

The benefits

When it comes to job applications, having the necessary technical skills is just one part of the equation. Equally important are soft skills, which are interpersonal attributes that allow people to effectively communicate, collaborate, and work with others.

Employers today often seek out candidates who possess strong soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, and time management, as these traits are critical in any workplace. In fact, many employers may prioritise soft skills over technical skills since they are generally easier to develop through training and practice.

Being a peer mentor offers you personal growth and an opportunity to build those soft skills that are so valued by employers. You'll also experience a sense of accomplishment through helping other students and being part of their growth and success.

Our peer leadership programs also have a rigorous recruitment process, which mean you'll also get to practice and hone your job application and interview skills.

My mentor was willing to assist and encouraged me to reach my goals, get more involved in university life and maintain excellent academic results. The knowledge he shared with me was invaluable and after the program I felt very confident in refining and defining my career goals.
