Student projects

Commencing a project

Please follow one of the relevant instructional guides below on how to commence a project within the School of Engineering.

You can not commence any project work within the labs without:

  1. the required inductions
  2. a completed project safety assessment (DOTX, 11.1KB) that has been signed off by both the academic supervisor and the technician(s) for the labs you will be working in, and
  3. approval of your project budget (PDF, 1007.0KB).

Please note, any project outside of the School of Engineering requires a work safety assessment (DOC, 124.0KB)  instead of the above project safety assessment.

Project working spaces

Other than the individual engineering area laboratories, the product realisation laboratory is available to students working on projects. This space is open from 8am–7pm weekdays and offers general tools and consumables for use.

Prior to working in this space you must have completed both a level 1 and level 2 induction. Some equipment and tools contained within this space require a level 3 equipment/technique-specific induction. Please refer to our inductions page for further information.

Budget and pricing

Deakin undergraduate and masters by coursework students have a budget for their projects. The engineering pricing guide is being developed and is to be used in conjunction with the project budget form (PDF, 1007.0KB) to calculate costings for your projects. Please refer to technical team for costing. If the proposed cost of your project exceeds your budget, you need to reassess the project to see if costs can be reduced, or seek additional funding.

You must have your budget approved by your project supervisor, unit chair and technical co-ordinator. For the cost of any other consumables/equipment not included in the pricing guide, please contact the relevant technician or refer to the relevant laboratory page.
