Employee Wellbeing Support (EWS) program

At Deakin, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all staff. In recognising the importance of providing a mentally healthy workplace, the University is introducing a new Employee Wellbeing Support (EWS) program provided through Converge, replacing the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider, Benestar from 1 April 2021.

Converge International offers a free confidential, personal coaching and counselling service that provides support for a variety of short-term, personal or work-related topics including:

  • Support for mental health
  • Relationships or family matters
  • Coping with change
  • Interpersonal conflict and tension
  • Strategies to create better work-life balance
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Personal and emotional stress
  • Guidance on parenting issues
  • Changes in your work environment
  • Advice on how to improve your fitness and nutrition ​​​​​​​

Types of support available through EWS

These support services are delivered by qualified and highly skilled professionals including psychologists, social workers, counsellors and a network of Associates throughout Victoria.

Professional Support to employees and their immediate family include:

  • Employee Assist: Relationship/stress/anxiety/ and other  issues
  • Family Assist
  • Nutrition and Lifestyle Assist
  • Conflict Assist
  • Money Assist
  • Career Assist
  • Legal Assist (limit of 2 sessions per annum) for non-work related legal issues
  • Manager Assist: Professional, impartial advice is available to you if you are responsible for a team of people and have a difficult or complex workplace issue to work through.

You can access EWS services free of charge for up to 5 sessions per issue.  Counsellors maintain strict confidentiality, so no information regarding what is discussed within any counselling session is relayed to any other person or organisation without your consent. Personal details and your participation in the program also remain confidential. Your confidentiality is assured and you details will not be passed on to anyone at your organisation.

All staff can continue to have access to EWS program for 3 months post leaving Deakin. The program is centrally funded by Deakin University and it is therefore a free service to you.

Support for Managers and Staff leaders

Manager Assist is a confidential coaching and advisory service for leaders of people, including team leaders, managers and supervisors. In addition to providing expert support and advice on the multiple challenges of managing people, Manager Assist offer leadership coaching and training that focuses on self-development and improved personal leadership skills.

Your Manager Assist coach is your experienced partner, working with you to evaluate, plan, implement and achieve your personal, professional and organisational goals across:​​​​​​​

  • Developing self-awareness around leadership, personality and working style
  • Managing underperforming staff and other difficult staffing issues
  • Addressing workplace conflict
  • Developing and implementing strategies to support your staff and their mental health
  • Change management support
  • Improving workplace and interpersonal relationships
  • Building a successful team.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

What sort of issues/ problems can I use the EWS program for?

Answer: EWP can provide short-term, personal and confidential counselling across a broad spectrum of personal and work related issues that have the ability to impact day to day functioning and wellbeing such as responsibility at work, work-life balance, depression/anxiety, stress management, managing change, emotional stress, relationship issues, interpersonal conflict or problems such as gambling or substance abuse.

Do I need a referral to use this service?

Answer: No, however your manager may refer you to the service if there is a need.

How many sessions can I access as part of the EWS?

Answer: Up to 5 sessions per issue are available for all staff members. The program is centrally funded by Deakin University and it is therefore a free service to you.

Can my family members access the service?

Answer: Yes, your family members who live in your household can use the EWS program.

Is this service completely confidential and how much is reported back to employers?

Answer: Yes, the program is confidential. All information obtained is strictly confidential unless the employee requests the Counsellor to communicate with a third party. Converge is bound by Australian privacy law and guidelines relating to the privacy of health information. Where an issue raised has broader implications for the department, the employee may agree to contact the Staff Wellbeing Team via staffwellbeing@deakin.edu.au

Is the Manager Assist service for free?

Yes, there is no cost for individual Manager Assist consulting. However all ‘team building’ and ‘add-on’ information or education sessions provided by Converge for groups of staff may be billed separately as an extra.

The cost for those sessions will be directed back to the organisational area who requested it.
