OHS Training

This section contains responsibilities for all managers and supervisors.

Victorian legislation requires employers to provide their workers with any information, instruction, training and/or supervision necessary to enable them to perform their work in a way that is safe and without risks to their health.

The Act and Regulations have specific requirements to ensure that information, training and instruction is provided to workers and that training is targeted to the nature of the work, the nature of the risks associated with that work and the control measures implemented by the employer.

Managers and supervisors are required to:

  • Identify health and safety training needs
  • Develop an appropriate health and safety training program for workers
  • Ensure the competency of workers that carry out hazardous work
  • Maintain associated records.

OHS Training Standard

The OHS Training Standard is the University's policy and procedure for managing OHS training.

This Standard is separate from the Deakin University OHS Induction Standard, and does not cover specific obligations relating to staff, visitor, tenant or contractor induction.

The following documents will assist in implementing the Standard:

  • Safety culture
  • Safety role of the supervisor
  • Safety training and coaching
  • Safety performance

To request a training session on a particular topic, contact Health, Wellbeing and Safety.

SmartMove

SmartMove is designed for students in years ten to twelve to make them a little more aware of what can happen in the workplace. It will give them a chance to learn about the potential dangers of the workplace but also their rights and responsibilities.

SmartMove is suitable for use by students and others new to the workplace.
